A rewrite...

Excerpt: Castro, who took control of Cuba in 1959, resisted repeated U.S. attempts to oust him and survived communism's demise elsewhere, also said in the statement that he was temporarily handing over leadership of the Communist Party to his younger brother.

That is what it says. It could say:
Castro, who won power in Cuba during the 1959 revolution with the aid of the United States who assisted in the overthrow of their former puppet leader Batista, has succeeded in resisting attempts to be taken over by American imperialist interests and American corporate control. Castro, due to his illness cannot serve the best interest of his counrty and, as a result, has temporarily handed leadership of his democratic communist party to his brother Raul Castro.

Both are ideological, both shape a reality, especially one that is gradually maintained for decades with the utmost consistancy.
