Upscale of Iraqi violence due to stepped up military offensive: US

A recent uptick in violence in Iraq is due to an offensive operation by security forces moving in the face of insurgents bent on increasing anarchy, the US military said.

"This is an extremely offensive operation," said Colonel Thomas Vail
So let's see if I have this straight; the reason there's more violence in Iraq is because we have more troops there!? But just a few days ago they said
U.S. Generals: Baghdad Violence Curbed

"I think everybody has seen an improvement in the situation in Baghdad over the last weeks because of the operations of the Iraqi security forces supported by the American Army," [Army Gen. George Casey] said. "And we're confident that we can sustain that."
[...]
[Gen. John Abizaid said] "I think that there's been great progress in the security front here recently in Baghdad,"
And the reason they originally gave when they recalled Marines, issued stop-loss orders and shifted more troops to Baghdad?
BAGHDAD, Iraq Jul 29, 2006 (AP)— The U.S. command announced Saturday that it was sending 3,700 troops to Baghdad to try to quell the sectarian violence sweeping the capital, and a U.S. official said more American soldiers would follow as the military gears up to take the streets from gunmen.
So according to the generals we needed more troops to quell the violence that has resulted in more violence and the need for more troops. WTF!?

I do agree with the assessment Colonel Thomas Vail made; This is an extremely offensive operation!
