Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum
Same-sex marriage bill, as written, called a threat to social service contracts

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.
[...]
City leaders said the church is not the dominant provider of any particular social service, but the church pointed out that it supplements funding for city programs with $10 million from its own coffers.
[...]
From 2006 through 2008, Catania said, Catholic Charities received about $8.2 million in city contracts, as well as several hundred thousand dollars' worth this year through his committee.
With the Catholic Church, the Mormon Church and evangelicals churches advocating political actions I think they abrogated any right to the 1st Amendment when they crossed the line between church and state.

Personally, I never understood why religions get a break in taxes. Now pardon me while I go shear my flock for tax exempt dollars.

And with this decision, the "Little-Boy's Butt-fucker's Church" is trying to rewrite political legislation with threats of services refusal.

WITH THIS, the appropriate response would be to summarily deny ALL Catholic Church functions its privilaged tax-exemption status.

The U.S. should be fuckin' them in the butt for a change.

Now, now DanD, slow down, take a deep breath and remind yourself (as you have me, many times) that we aren't talking about kind, decent people who lead by example and/or give a shit about our citizens.

Interested in helping to start a Steinfeld-type religion about nothing at all? We could start the VidiotSpeak Church of Nothing and maybe qualify for all those tax exemptions. The only thing for parishioners is that belief in god or any other deity would be entirely optional.

It seems to me if there was truly a separation of church and state the gov't wouldn't treat churches differently.

Tax 'em all, and let god sort it out.

Great paraphrase, Sailor!

Anyway, I already belong to the Common Church of Murphy. Yup, I religiously assume to the one greatest, omnipotent statement of all existence, that being: "If something can go wrong, it will, at the worst possible time."

The corollaries to this foundation understanding to all that has been or ever will be also expand into infinity.
