A little subtext?

Two things struck me as odd this week.

First was the whole McChrystal-to-Petraeus thing. Why on earth would McChrystal say all that stuff to a freakin' Rolling Stone journalist knowing full well it was going to get printed and talked about?

Here's my theory: that there is some extreme dissatisfaction in the military with regards to Obama and Biden. Like to the point where, in any other country, they'd be planning and executing a coupe by now. What if McChrystal threw himself on a sword to send a message to the administration that the military is pissed and the Obama administration had better get their act together.

Just a thought. (Bill, please chime in on this one 'cause I know very little about the military and if such a scenario is possible.)

Second, and a little more obvious, when Obama issued the moratorium on drilling in the Gulf, big oil acted all pissed and all the little liberals went "Yay! Obama!" and everyone seemed fine. I mean, who doesn't want to put big oil in their place? Then the southern judge said, "No, uh-uh, state's rights, bee-yatch" and put the kibosh on the moratorium. How did that little drama benefit anybody?

Well, I'll tell you. By issuing the moratorium, Obama appeared to be doing the will of the people though he knew full well that it would get overturned in the southern court. Getting it overturned makes big oil happy, and politicians love it when big oil is happy. It's a win-win. The oilmen can continue to drill, and Obama comes out looking like he tried to do something.

Just a little food for thought.

Now, if you'll excuse me, Teen Vidiot went back to Louisiana to spend the summer with his mom and I have about eight loads of laundry to get to, my effort to purge the house of his adolescent stank. My word! Teen-aged boys are stanky.

UPDATE: I was just listening to the WRH radio show from last night and I'm not the only one who thinks McChrystal threw himself on a sword. The guy who called in thought it was because McChrystal is against the upcoming war with Iran and went off because of that OR he was set up because of his opposition to that upcoming war.

Interesting.

While military people love a patriotic war, they put their heart into the slaughter not so much when the highest profit-takers are perceived to be mostly foriegn nationals (BP, drug lords, etc.).

Also remember, MickyC was the lead authority attempting to get some patriotic miles out of the Tillman assassination. As was that iconic hitman for team corporate America, S. Butler, McChrystal is also a delivery-boy (apologies to Shrek) for the extranationals, it's just that he represents a different faction than Obama does.

As far as the oilcano is concerned? I've come to suspect that Obama LIHOP'd that disaster specifically for the perpetual distraction that it provides. Want to get something off the newscycle? Any latest devestation in the Gulf will ALWAYS be an excellent refocus, at least for the short-term.

One thing I do know, If MickyC ever did really start advocating for all those (uselessly-eating) little people both in and out of rank, all those corporate hitmen just hanging around America's modern battlefields would summarily do a "Tillman" on him. You don't get that high in the military command infrastructure by EVER becoming squeemish about how much cannon-fodder will get annihilated. Even Smedley's literary conscience didn't revive in him until after he was retired.

And also come-on, Obama's been given his corporate marching orders, and he's to keep his hands off of that oil gusher util BP officially passes that disaster over to him! Consequently? So far, he's become an even better corporate slave than Dubya ever pretended to be ... HNIC indeed.

Although it is not uncommon for an individual officer or two to knowingly destroy their careers and have many silent supporters (See: gwb administration), I wouldn't look upon this as a harbinger of future ill-will between Obama and his command staff. If anything I would think the scenario envisioned in your update would be more likely the reason the general was fired rather than McChrystal war-mongering for more conflict. Our military is badly broken and it will be years before we could enter into another reckless war with any chance of succeeding. And all our command staff knows it; it is mainly idiotic congressmen and senators to stupid to realize how badly these wars have depleted our resources, especially our troops.

I've heard the theory that the General wanted out of a sure lose situation. This way he gets to retire and make big $$ going on FuxNews to complain about how he was sacked.
