Disgusting and Shameful
posted by The Vidiot @ 11:28 AM Permalink Out in Long Island, some poor Wal-mart employee got trampled to death by the Black Friday crowd.Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.What drives people to want to shop like that? What makes someone so focused on getting a bargain or a thing, that they don't even notice that a human being is dying beneath their feet? Not only that, while the paramedics were working the dead guy and before they closed the store, shoppers continued to stream into the place with only a few of them even stopping to notice!
Are we really that sick of a society? And if we are, why are we? I'm not going to point the finger at capitalism, because it can't only be that. But why do these things happen? Is it the media that tries to stir this nonsense up in the public? Is it peer pressure? I can't figure it out. I've NEVER in my entire life felt that strong of an urge to shop so I can't even put my head in that place to try to understand it.

What's interesting to note: tonight on the PBS Newshour just completed, there was a segment on Black Friday with some Harvard Business School professor and a Conde Nast magazine representative (gimme a break) spouting non sequiturs about the upcoming Holiday buying. Not a mention of the Walmart Long Island incident, but maybe it was taped prior to the trampling?
Slightly O/T, I rarely go to Starbucks, but I did to day to grab one of their mediocre coffees. Inside on the counter was a flyer about pressing issues in these dreadful economic times. But true to the holiday spirit, on the cover of this pamphlet: "'Tis the Season to Spend." Crikey!
