Here's what I don't get.
posted by The Vidiot @ 10:21 AM Permalink The United States has a loooooong history of manipulating other governments. From "Remember the Maine!" to the Gulf of Tonkin, to 9/11, to the Marshall Plan, etc., the US has made a point to spread it's tentacles into any and every country that had something that the US wanted, be it oil, sugar, coffee, natural gas, gold, whatever. Look at Iran for instance. British Petroleum, waaaaay back in the beginning of the oil business, basically raped Iran of profits from the oil discovered in that country. When Iran said "cut it out," Britain, along with the CIA, fomented a revolution there, placed a weak man, the Shah, in charge, manipulated the crap out of him so that they could continue to garner the profits from that oil. Until of course Iran again said "cut it out" and then did something about it. This sort of thing has happened over and over and over again.Whenever you see a coup that is replaced by a "western friendly" leader, and whether or not that coup is done with the military or with a voting booth, you can be pretty sure that it was manipulated by factions in the United States on some level. Each and every one of them. I'd bet money on it.
And when some country is being targeted by the US, you can be pretty sure they just said "no" to the Western powers. That was their crime. They just said "no."
Most people know these things. Most people know that most western friendly leaders are merely puppets of Western governments, that they were installed by Western powers and are controlled by those same powers. Yet, they still think that the US some sort of benevolent force in the world. That people in other countries admire us.
What I don't get is how the hell can they think that?
(Yes, I'm in a mood this morning. Can't you tell?)

I would call the USA view "American exceptionalism." The US can do whatever it wants and the rest of the world be damned.
This was a good post, btw.
I'd also call it US imperialism and it's alive even now. Don't think the Democrats or Republicans are different in that regard. Have you read Savage Mules by Dennis Perrin?
indeed. I just got off the phone with my mom where I had to explain to her that the dems and the repubs are not different and at best, what they do to each other is just clannish infighting. She's aghast, of course.
thanks for reading and commenting. Honestly, i appreciate it.
I always check vidiotspeak regularly. i remember you used to post comments on TL, no?
Part of it is that the media rarely tells the American people what the rest of the world really thinks of us. The rest is denial.
i didn't post on TL, but The Sailor might have.
Sardonicus, you are correct. Exactly.
