Long before Sir Thomas More wrote his book, "Utopia," in 1516, men and women of good and chaste character have always believed in the perfect society, everyone in a community knowing what role they should play, and everyone endeavoring to play that role as best they could.
But certain branches of society considered themselves gods on earth and when these people, whom I'll loosely refer to as Priests, discovered that with their superior intelligence, feral cunning, and absolute ruthlessness they could easily dominate those less intelligent by inventing horrific stories of the cruelty of the gods that must be appeased, even inventing the convention of confession to gather ever more information about the poor with which they easily blackmailed the weaker minded into submission.
We had our shot. It fell short as the charlatans remained just one step ahead: Raping, pillaging, hunting animals to the point of extinction, wiping out opposing tribes, spreading disease, and on and on and on.
I think we could still achieve Utopia by limiting our numbers, everyone finding their niche and filling it, and most of all accepting and devoting ourselves to the need of others as we do ourselves.
